Is there an app that scans food photos and tells you if it will cause breakouts?
Yes — that is what SpotBite does. Take a photo of any meal. The AI reads what is on the plate, and SpotBite gives it a Skin Score from 0 to 100. Higher is better. Under the score you see why: how much came from sugar, how much from dairy, how much from inflammatory fats — and what added points back.
Calorie apps like Cal AI tell you what a meal does to your weight. SpotBite tells you what it may do to your skin.
How it works
Snap
Take a photo of the meal, or pick one from your gallery. Home-cooked, restaurant, packaged — anything on a plate.
Score
The AI splits the meal into ingredients. The Skin Score is then calculated on your phone from those ingredients — you can toggle any of them and watch the score change.
Track
Log how your skin looks each day. SpotBite maps every meal forward 3 to 5 days and shows which foods were active when a breakout appeared.
What the Skin Score measures
Three things acne reacts to, weighted by how strong the research is:
| Axis | What it looks at | Max points off |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar (glycemic) | High-glycemic carbs that raise insulin — white bread, sweet drinks, rice, pastries. SpotBite shows the glycemic index estimate for the meal. | 50 |
| Dairy | Milk, cheese, yogurt, whey. Linked to acne in a review of 14 studies, with skim milk showing the strongest link. | 25 |
| Inflammation | Saturated fat, fried food, chocolate, omega-6 heavy oils. | 25 |
| Skin Boost | Omega-3 fish, leafy greens, berries, green tea. Adds points back. | +25 |
Every meal starts at 100. Score = 100 − sugar − dairy − inflammation + skin boost, kept between 0 and 100. Four bands: GLOW 90+, GOOD 70+, WARN 40+, AVOID below 40. See the studies behind each axis →
Why your skin reacts late — and why that matters
Diet-related breakouts do not show up the same day. In a controlled study, acne peaked 4 to 7 days after eating cocoa. So when a breakout appears on Friday, the meal that mattered was probably Monday or Tuesday — not last night's dinner.
Most food apps score today and forget. SpotBite keeps each meal “active” for the days it is likely to show, in both directions:
- Forward: today's meal → how your skin may look in 3 to 5 days.
- Backward: today's skin → the meals from the past week that may have caused it.
Over 30 days the pattern calendar shows your estimated skin load every day, and lists your suspect foods and skin-friendly foods from what you actually ate.
What makes SpotBite different from other acne food scanners
- Glycemic index shown. High-glycemic diet is the diet factor with the strongest research link to acne. Most acne apps do not show it.
- Score you can read. Not just “45/100” — you see how many points came from sugar, dairy and inflammation, and you can edit ingredients to test what-ifs.
- Delay tracking. Meals are mapped forward 3 to 5 days, so the pattern view matches how skin actually behaves.
- Cooked meals, not just barcodes. A salad, a rice bowl or an acai bowl gets scored from a photo. No packaging needed.
- Private by design. Scans, scores and your skin log stay on your phone. No account.

Common questions
Is SpotBite free?
Free to download. SpotBite Pro unlocks unlimited scans and the full pattern view: $29.99/year with a 7-day free trial, or $4.99/month. Prices may differ by country.
Are my food photos uploaded or stored?
A downscaled copy of the photo is sent to the AI to read the ingredients and is not stored on our servers. Everything else — scans, scores, skin log — stays on your phone. You can delete all of it from the You tab.
The AI got my meal wrong. What can I do?
Tap any ingredient to turn it off, or add one from the suggestions. The score updates instantly, on your phone, without another AI call.
Why did the same meal get a slightly different score?
The AI estimates portions and ingredients from the photo, so two photos of the same dish can differ by a few points. The direction (GOOD vs AVOID) is stable; the exact number can move.
Does it work for Android?
Yes. SpotBite is on both the App Store and Google Play. On Play, search for “SpotBite” as one word.
Is SpotBite medical advice?
No. SpotBite gives lifestyle insight based on published research. It does not diagnose or treat acne and does not replace a dermatologist. If your acne is severe or scarring, please see one.
