The science behind the Skin Score
SpotBite does not invent its own nutrition theory. The Skin Score is a plain-language version of what controlled studies and systematic reviews have found about diet and acne. This page lists those studies, explains how each axis of the score uses them, and is honest about the limits.

How research becomes a score
Every meal starts at 100. Points are taken off for three things the research links to acne, and added back for foods linked to calmer skin:

The score is calculated on your phone from the ingredients the AI detected — the AI does not “decide” the score, it only reads the plate. That is why you can toggle an ingredient and watch the number change instantly.
Glycemic load — the strongest evidence
High-glycemic foods raise insulin and a related growth hormone (IGF-1), which increases skin oil and cell build-up in pores. Three trials tested the opposite: put people with acne on a low-glycemic diet and see what happens.
- Low-glycemic diet improved acne over 12 weeks — Am J Clin Nutrition, 2007. Randomized trial in young men; the low-GI group had fewer lesions and better insulin sensitivity.
- Low-glycemic-load diet reduced acne in a 10-week trial — Acta Derm Venereol, 2012. Randomized trial in Korea; skin biopsies showed smaller oil glands and less inflammation.
- Two weeks of a low-GI diet lowered a skin growth hormone — Acta Derm Venereol, 2018. IGF-1 dropped within two weeks, which is why the glycemic axis fades over about two weeks in the app.
Dairy — consistent link, mechanism shown
- Skim milk raised a skin growth hormone within a week — Eur J Clin Nutrition, 2004. Feeding study: milk raised IGF-1 in about a week. The dairy axis in SpotBite ramps over ~10 days for this reason.
- Review of 14 studies: dairy linked to higher acne risk — J Am Acad Dermatology, 2018. Meta-analysis of 78,529 people; any dairy, and skim milk in particular, was associated with acne.
- Milk intake linked to acne in teenagers — Dermatology Online Journal, 2006. Large cohort of teenage girls.
Honest limit: nobody has run a trial that removes dairy and measures acne. The link is strong and repeated, but it is an association plus a mechanism, not a proven cause.
Inflammation — chocolate and fats
- Chocolate increased breakouts in a controlled study — J Clin Aesthet Dermatology, 2014. Single dose of pure cocoa; lesions peaked 4 to 7 days later. This one number is the origin of SpotBite's delay tracking.
- Daily dark chocolate worsened acne over 4 weeks — J Med Assoc Thai, 2016. Randomized trial in men with acne-prone skin.
Honest limit: these are small trials. Saturated fat and omega-6 oils are included because of their known effect on inflammatory signals, not because of an acne-specific trial.
Skin Boost — omega-3 and polyphenols
- Fish oil reduced inflammatory acne over 12 weeks — Lipids in Health and Disease, 2012.
- Mediterranean diet with omega-3 improved acne (16 weeks) — J Cosmetic Dermatology, 2024.
- Green tea polyphenols reduced oil and acne — Antioxidants, 2017.

Why SpotBite tracks 3 to 5 days forward
The cocoa study above is the clearest measurement of timing: lesions peaked 4 to 7 days after a single dose. The growth-hormone studies show dairy and glycemic effects building over 1 to 2 weeks. So SpotBite does not score “today” and forget. Each meal stays active for the days it is likely to show, with a different curve per axis:

The pattern calendar you see in the app is these curves added up for every meal you scanned. It is an estimate, not a forecast — the word we use in the app is Estimate on purpose.
What SpotBite does not claim
- It does not claim any food causes your acne. It shows which foods, by the research, are the usual suspects, and lets your own log confirm or reject them.
- It does not replace treatment. Retinoids, antibiotics and hormonal therapy have far stronger evidence than any diet change.
- The AI's ingredient and portion estimates can be wrong. Edit them; the score updates.
